Six years ago today, I began a new journey and never looked back

On 12-12-12 I fearfully, and excitedly launched life i design.

I had been working long days, 7 days a week for 3 months, preparing my new website, creating art and launching my print shop. So much has changed since that day.

The smallest reminder with the biggest possibilities, lies in this little acorn talisman that I picked up for myself.

I had no idea what I was doing. I was trying to figure out the what’s, how’s, and why’s, all at once. When I look back, I think about how insane it all was. But I was happy!

After having spent the previous 13 years building a flourishing, freelance makeup artistry business, I knew I was ready for a change and in my heart, I knew I had to live a life that I designed.

What does “life i design” mean to me?

In a very random but powerful aha moment, I knew that I wanted to create art, share art, and inspire others to surround themselves by art. I knew that I wanted to continue to work from home, on my terms and with freedom to choose, when I worked and how I worked {My kids were still young, but didn’t need me as much}. I knew I wanted to maintain my independence while earning my own money and still be able to contribute to the family budget. I knew I was happiest when I painted, blogged, designed and created.

Life i design means to me; the freedom to choose how you spend your time each day, while being mindful of what you are creating, sharing and doing. To always be inspired and inspiring. Nicki

Whether it’s what I share here or on social media, what quote I letter or even how I decorate my home, I continue to express the freedom to be me and on my terms. Don’t get me wrong. It’s not always easy and not always a positive experience.

I’ve learned a great deal over the years about what works and what doesn’t work. I made bad choices and experienced poor timing with decisions. My income fluctuates and can most often be unreliable. But all of those things mean that my days are not boring! That’s for certain!

Who knew that 6 years ago today, from a little idea and a lot of passion, would life i design be the thriving business that it is today.

I may have not had all the answers during this journey of mine, but I sure do have lots of life lessons to share. 2019 and my 7th year of business means I plan to create more, share more, teach more, inspire more and of course make more mistakes so I can learn more!

One of my favourite spots on my desk.

One of my favourite spots on my desk.

My clients, followers, subscribers, workshop attendees, business partners and friends, have each played a huge roll in encouraging me to grow each day.

Mighty oaks from little acorns grow. Great things come from small beginnings.

This acorn is a little trinket I picked up for myself. It is tiny. It is heavy. It is solid. it sits on my desk as a reminder to me that;

Might oaks from little acorns grow.

If you have an idea and feel a passion to see it through, may you continue to learn, grow and try. You never know what you will grow and how you will grow from that little acorn of an idea.

Thank you for being here as I celebrate my 6th anniversary.
