How to Make Time for Art During the Summer Holiday

Making time for your art practice over the summer holidays can be difficult. Everyone gets caught up with summer trips, vacations, and activities. With warm weather, summer vacations, and the kids out of school, life can get crazy during the summer! Here are a few tips to keep you practicing art this summer, even when you’re super busy and enjoying the sun!

Create a summer art routine you can follow

A sketch every morning with breakfast or right before bed is a simple way to make some time for your art practice this summer. There are many daily art challenges out there for you to try, but sometimes it’s best to pick something and stick with it. When I did the 100-day project earlier this year, I decided to practice portrait sketching every day, and having a routine, I could follow and be excited about really helped. Make sure to choose a realistic goal that you can easily add to your schedule to stay motivated and excited about creating!

Swap TV for creativity

When you normally watch TV or scroll on your phone, you could use this time to paint! This goes along with creating an art routine you can follow, but when you’re busy with summer activities and find some peaceful time that you can use to work on your art practice, I say go for it! I don’t mean ALWAYS swap tv for creativity, sometimes you need a break and time to relax your brain, and that’s OK! But when TV is easy, and you have the motivation to do something creative, choose creativity!

Create a travel kit of supplies to bring with you on trips

I LOVE to take my sketchbook and some art supplies with me on trips to get in some quick practice when inspiration strikes. I find traveling to be very inspiring, so having your supplies handy is super helpful! It also helps to avoid those lulling moments during a trip, like plane rides or a long road trip, when you’re not the one driving. Especially if your flight is delayed, it’s nice to work on some art while you’re waiting. If you’re unsure what to bring, create a small travel art kit that can fit in a variety of your bags and keep it simple with a couple of pencils and a small watercolor palette to use when you arrive to your destination. Less is more when you’re traveling.

Enjoy the sun while you paint

Taking your art practice outside is the perfect way to enjoy the summer weather while also spending time on your art. Bring your art supplies with you on your next bike ride, hike, or walk and explore endless possibilities from your view!

Or if you’re looking for inspiration, my Trace & Paint books are the perfect way to paint more and learn new compositions while enjoying the sun! There are even Trace & Paint e-books available that are PERFECT for travel!

It’s easy to get caught up in the summer fun. Trust me; I’ve been there. I have been so busy this summer, but I never want to look back and wish I painted more. Try out some of these tips, and let me know what works for you.
