How to Start a Calligraphy Business

Years ago when I started life i design from home, I didn’t have any plans to offer calligraphy services or products. Calligraphy and lettering wasn’t even on my radar at the time. I thought I would paint, design wall art prints, and make things that would help people create an inspiring space in their homes.

Then along came a calligraphy class on Skillshare. I watched and re-watched the video lessons and as soon as I got my hands on the right calligraphy tools, learned how to hold my pen and control my strokes, I was instantly hooked!

With some practice and self promotion, I was lettering quotes, invitations, home decor products, clothing, stationery and wall art prints… to name a few!

Offering calligraphy as a service and on products was what I was becoming known for. Past customers were referring me, current clients kept coming back for more custom designs and my home based print shop was hopping!

I was in shock and awe that I could do something that I loved - drawing pretty letters - and be paid for it!

Don’t get me wrong, not every job was easy or went smoothly, but with each brief, I learned how to interpret what my customer was looking for and with every product designed, I learned what appealed to most customers. I created passive income streams where I literally wake up and check the new sales that have come in, as well as active income streams where I design and letter for clients as freelance work. Not sure what those are?! Don’t worry, neither did I until a few years ago. Now I have multiple income streams in my calligraphy and art based business. It’s what helps me build this long-term, diverse business of mine.

A few years into offering calligraphy services and products, calligraphy made up approximately 80% of my income! I recognized a trend in the market and was right there for the ride!

Starting a calligraphy business from home is something that I’ve begun helping others do this past year and it’s so exciting to see how each of my students have different starting points, skillsets and goals, but most often, they all start their calligraphy business the same way.

They …

1) Create strong pieces of calligraphy work and,
