5 Books for Watercolor Artists

As an avid reader constantly seeking inspiration or learning something new, I’ve read many books over the years. In this blog post, I wanted to highlight the 5 best books for watercolor painting artists and a few other resources to help inspire your next art project.

Best Books for Watercolor Painting Artists

How to Paint Like Turner

I love how the artist shows you how to re-create the “emotion” of the way Turner painted with step-by-step examples. The use of gestural brush strokes and color is a really beautiful experience, especially when looking through this book for inspiration. Grab your copy from Amazon (USA) (CA).

Colour: A Visual History

I am slowly getting through this book and two others I bought on color, pigments, and the history of colors. This is a great read when you want to pick up a book and read through a few pages. It’ll take me some time to get through this one. Grab your copy from Amazon (USA) (CA).

Art Fundamentals: 2nd Edition

I’m still on the fence about this one, but I feel like it has some really great fundamental ideas that show you how to create depth, work with composition, value ranges, etc. I just wish it had less digital art as examples and more fine art. I'm still working through this and excited to get to the anatomy section. Grab your copy from Amazon (USA) (CA).

Watercolor Made Simple

Watercolor Made Simple is designed for watercolor artists who want to gain confidence in their paintings, learn new techniques, and create something they have fun creating! It’s a fully instructional book filled with fun painting projects and tips to help you have fun in your creative practice while exploring new things.

Trace & Paint Books: Botanicals & Nature

These are really two books, but I couldn’t pick a favorite. Trace & Paint Botanicals and Trace & Paint Nature are designed to help you skip over the unknown and get straight to painting! With easy-to-trace traceables on every page, you’ll be able to focus on exploring colors, new techniques, and new projects.

Watercolor Painting Books for Adults

All of the books mentioned in this blog post were created for adults. They are a mix of instructional, inspirational, and motivational and will help you learn to paint more and inspire you to try something new.

In a recent YouTube video, Art Books for Artists, I share a few of the books that inspire me most and what’s inside! Grab a coffee and chat through some of my favorite parts of these books and what makes them so special.
